An ‘Official’ badge for that US$8 Twitter subscription? [Updated]

Edwin Chabuka Avatar

Things are moving quickly on Twitter since Elon Musk bought the company. Employees got fired then got called back again and the US$8 payments have started rolling in. The result, for now, is a second verification check mark with the label ‘Official’.

So essentially some Twitter-verified accounts are more verified than others. And at the moment it seems the extra verification is only available to a select number of already verified users. Our President included. The criteria being used are Verified accounts of really influential accounts like Presidents, multinational businesses, and the top NGOs just to name a few.

Not all previously verified accounts will get the ‘Official’ label and the label is not available for purchase. Accounts that will receive it include government accounts, commercial companies, business partners, major media outlets, publishers and some public figures.

So far it’s really an iteration phase where they are building the plane mid-fall. How exactly this new verification will work is not yet concrete and apart from priority in searches and replies to tweets as well as bragging rights, it’s not yet convincing enough of its value proposition.

And because a blue verification check mark is a pre-requisite it’s not looking good as a fundraising effort. Only 400 000 Twitter accounts are verified and I am sure not all of them will pay for the 2nd verification badge. But it’s not reached its final form yet so let us see what comes next.

[Update]

They removed it. Glad we took a screenshot of it and used it as the cover image for this article. It seems the experiment has been called off and it’s back to the drawing board. This is a tweet from Elon Musk:

Please note that Twitter will do lots of dumb things in coming months. We will keep what works & change what doesn’t.

Elon Musk Twitter

As I said. It’s not the final form just yet.

A packet of carrot seeds (most seeds really) costs about $1USD in the supermarket (Pick’n’Pay, OK Zimbabwe. With that small packet you can plant a reasonably sized garden, & if you wanted daily, you can get some pretty good carrots in between 90-120 days. With $25USD, that is a lot of carrot seed. Maybe you can use some of that money to buy some really good manure (not sure how much, but I’m assuming $10USD you can get plenty). Your challenge is to find a market to sell after the harvest, because believe me you will get a harvest. If you plant a big enough garden, you can harvest all your produce & sell it in bulk at mbare musika. I haven’t sold there, but I think you may be able to sell there. I’ve personally cultivated carrots for personal consumption, with this $1USD seed as a hobby at home, & I LOVE IT.

READ THIS VERSION BELOW. Corrected some typos.

Many people in business know better not to listen to people who have no experience in the business you are talking about. Tanga wanotengesa ku mbare musika wozodzoka woita ma Confessions ako pano

At least I gave the person my opinion. What is your opinion? Maybe if you gave your own opinion, someone else would react the way you did to mine, or worse.

Well, at least they are iterating. But if its going to be like this, maybe they should start a limited opt-in alpha-testing program to minimise disruption, the perception of confusion and inevitable endemic trolling of Musky and Twitter in front of investors and advertisers.

  5. Wait

Figure you as you go on a $44B investment!

Many companies do this with their products, they just don’t announce it in public. Google it still iterating on Google Chats after forcing Google Talk users to switch.

Move fast and break some things. And if you owe $1 billion in interest payments every year from the loan you took to buy the company that you never really wanted. You really have no other option other than to throw things against the wall to see what sticks. So Twitter is losing millions daily?
Fire half of the company and then call some of them back.
Promise complete Freedom of speech on Twitter.
Advertisers removed their ads because they didn’t want their ads popping up next to racist tweets? Backtrack and say that there will still be some controls in place. Implement the new blue check to raise revenue…… 🙂

Elon just want to recover his 44billion as fast as possible but that’s not going to happen , there’s a reason why they forced him to buy Twitter…twitter ship is sinking.
