If you follow telecommunications in Africa then you may have heard of Liquid Telecom. It’s kind of a big deal in Africa. In fact, it’s one of the biggest Internet Access Providers on the continent. They provide access in more than 12 countries in East, South and Central Africa. The company recently announced that Wellington Makamure would now be the Regional CEO for Southern Africa.

Mr Makamure is not new to Liquid Telecom and he already held roles within the company; he was the Managing Director in Zimbabwe and a Group Executive in Southern Africa.  We tried to get in touch with Mr Makamure directly but unfortunately, he hadn’t to respond at the time of going to press.

The press release issued out by Liquid Telecom noted that in his new role, Makamure ”will be directly responsible for the leadership, strategic and operational management of Liquid Telecom’s wholesale, enterprise and retail businesses throughout Zimbabwe, Zambia, Democratic Republic of Congo and Botswana.”

Liquid Telecom is carrying out a restructuring and in Africa, the company will now be split into divisions and not by territory:

  • East Africa with Adil Youssefi as the new CEO
  • Southern Africa

The Group COO at Liquid Telecom Ahmad Mokhles also spoke about the recent appointment:

“We’re delighted to announce Wellington Makamure as our first Regional CEO of Southern Africa. The first centimetre of Liquid Telecom’s network was laid in Zimbabwe and Wellington has played an important role in establishing the country as a centre of excellence that can serve as an inspiration to our other businesses throughout the Southern African region,”

Wellington joined Liquid Telecom in 2009 and was pivotal in the planning, set-up and build of the Liquid Telecom network and business in Zimbabwe.
