Zimbabwean music superstar Jah Prayzah has just celebrated a career milestone and an achievement for local music.

His video for the hit Watora Mari which is a collaboration with Tanzanian superstar Diamond Platnumz has recorded over 1 million views on YouTube. Jah Prayzah shared a celebratory video on social media yesterday (on the 29th of August) thanking his fans for the support in reaching this figure.

Taps Mugadza’s video took 17 days to get to 1 million views while Jah Prayzah has hit the 1 million mark in 18 days.

These numbers show how local content can have a major appeal online, something that will hopefully inspire other local artists to improve their efforts to use the internet for the generation of interest in their work.

Update – In an earlier version of the article we had ranked the videos by Jah Payzah and Taps Mugadza as the first local music videos to record over 1 million views. That is incorrect. Another video from the Hohodza Band achieved this five years ago

Before we rush to claim who was first and who was second, there could be more videos you dont know about. Eg: The hohodza band https://youtu.be/KSiPfr7Lbvw has >1.8m

Thanks for pointing that out. We have since updated our article to reflect that.

you really should not have corrected anything. its a question of the time frame. 1 million in five years is not the same as a million in three weeks or less. In any case now its 2 million what then

I think many people are missing the point. Its not about videos that has surpassed a million views only but videos that have surpassed a million views within the shortest possible time. Some videos have more than a million views but were uploaded five years ago, Idya Banana by Joseph Garakara has more than 1,5 million views but when was it uploaded. This is a milestone and positive development for local music. Hopefully it will reach 10 million views where the likes of P-Square and Diamond are always
